CrewPASSSM
The need for increased security has forced the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to require more time to complete the screening process. As a result, the TSA is always looking for ways to continue to enhance security while making the passenger flow as efficient as possible. In light of this and the proven success of the Cockpit Access Security System (CASS), ARINC has developed the Crew Personnel Advanced Screening System (CrewPASSSM)an alternative screening process for airline crewmembers that will expedite checkpoint clearance into secured airport terminal areas, while further enhancing security.
CrewPASS leverages the underlying CASS architecture and introduces a state-of-the-art fingerprint biometric capability. Combining these two technologies provides the higher level of security necessary to enable expedited clearance for crewmembers. The CrewPASS concept was first conceived and promoted to the TSA by the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA). ALPA continues to provide the grassroots support necessary to move the program forward. An existing demonstration program for pilots, including a biometric capability since May 2009, is operating at the following airports:
- Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) – Concourse C and D
- Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT)
- Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE)
Participating flight crewmembers will still be able to use these locations without biometrics for an extended period of time. Enrollment will be required in the future and ARINC will provide updates on all significant dates. Flight attendants are to be added to CrewPASS at a future date.
Enrolling
CrewPASS is an opt-in program, giving each crewmember the choice to participate or not. The enrollment process takes about 5 minutes and requires the crewmember to (1) present some form of government identificationdriver’s license or passport, (2) allow a fingerprint scan, (3) present your valid airline identification, and (4) answer a few short questions. The CrewPASS system quickly determines the crewmember’s identity based on publicly available records and verifies the identity each time the individual accesses the system.
