ARINC Is Awarded Major Contract to Upgrade IT Systems throughout San Francisco International

December 10, 2009

Annapolis, Maryland—The Airport Systems Division of ARINC Incorporated has been awarded a comprehensive contract to refresh and upgrade multiple airport operational systems and passenger check-in systems at San Francisco International Airport.

The work is scheduled for completion in December 2010. ARINC’s customer is the Turner Construction Company, project manager for the Airport.

Under the contract, ARINC will replace the airport’s 9-year-old operational database with its advanced ARINC AirDBTM database solution. ARINC will also replace existing passenger flight information displays throughout most of the airport with its Internet-enabled AirVUETM flight information display system (FIDS).

ARINC originally provided the common-use passenger check-in and departure system at SFO’s International Terminal Building when it opened in 2000, and has maintained it since then. Under the new contract, ARINC will upgrade the International Terminal check-ins with its new vMUSETM technology.

“San Francisco is a flagship customer for ARINC technology, and we are very proud of our longstanding relationship that spans almost a decade,” said Michael Picco, ARINC Vice President Airports, The Americas. “We took on the responsibility of Master
Systems Integrator in 2000, when the project involved systems from multiple vendors. Now that SFO has decided to modernize all its Common Use IT systems, it only makes sense to choose our AirDB and AirVUE solutions. This will provide a fully integrated suite for better control and greater flexibility in managing their facilites.”

The new ARINC AirDB system will serve as the airport’s “nerve center,” managing real-time data and information among more than 12 airport operational systems including finance, scheduling, building management, resource allocation, and other mission-critical management tools.

Installation of the new vMUSE passenger technology will immediately reduce the cost of software engineering for airlines, as well as airport costs for custom printers, readers, and hardware. The vMUSE architecture is designed to be compatible with airlines’ custom applications, current common-use terminal equipment (CUTE), and the industry’s new CUPPS common-use standard just adopted. ARINC vMUSE was among the first common-use systems to achieve CUPPS certification in November, 2009.

ARINC’s work at SFO is under the direction of Turner Construction Company, which is responsible for all aspects of technology deployment and actual building construction for SFO Airport, including the current reconstruction or SFO Terminal 2. Turner Construction is one of the country’s largest building contractors, with a nationwide network of offices and a staff of more than 5,500. Turner performs work on more than 1,600 projects yearly, with an annual construction volume of $10 billion. For more information visit the web site at www.turnerconstruction.com.
