ARINC Delivers First AIM® Security System for U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve
December 2, 2009
Annapolis, Maryland—ARINC Incorporated has delivered the first of two AIM® Security Management Systems that will enhance security operations at Gulf Coast storage sites of the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR).
The ARINC system was commissioned in November following acceptance testing at the SPR’s Bryan Mound, Texas storage site. ARINC’s customer is AGSC Constructors Inc. of Belle Chase, Louisiana.
ARINC is also staging a second AIM system for delivery to a second SPR storage site at Bayou Choctaw, Louisiana under the same contract.
The SPR’s four underground storage sites hold about 700 million barrels of crude oil which is sold during emergencies to prevent oil shortages and price spikes that might damage the economy. Because SPR storage sites are considered part of U.S. national security, they have been equipped over the years with many different types of security and surveillance technologies.
ARINC’s AIM technology operates at a high level, as an Alarm Display and Annunciation System (ADAS), to manage all these on-site systems and provide a new layer of supervisory control and communications.
“Fortunately, the ARINC AIM system was made to order for this type of application,” states Matt Wilson, the ARINC Project Manager. “ARINC also has an established track record for integrating third-party components like these at other critical-infrastructure facilities, including most U.S. nuclear electric power plants and many major urban transit systems.”
The AIM integration will provide efficient local security management for each SPR site. AIM is able to integrate a whole range of third-party security equipment because it uses an “open architecture” that interfaces easily with proprietary solutions.
ARINC’s customer, AGSC Constructors Inc. of Belle Chase, Louisiana, is a Federal Small Business Contractor that manages modifications at the SPR storage sites for the Department of Energy, through SPR prime contractor Dyn McDermott.
ARINC Incorporated, a portfolio company of The Carlyle Group, provides communications, engineering and integration solutions for commercial, defense and government customers worldwide. Headquartered in Annapolis, Maryland with regional headquarters in London and Singapore, ARINC is ISO 9001:2008 certified.
