Edwin A. Link Flight Simulation Award for 2009 Presented to Engineer Craig Phillips of RSI

October 6, 2009

Annapolis, Maryland—Craig Phillips, a software developer who has spent a 30-year career pioneering new methods of computer visual simulation, was today named 2009 recipient of the Edwin A Link Award for his contributions to the flight simulator industry.

The Award was presented during Day One of the 2009 Flight Simulator Engineering and Maintenance Conference (FSEMC) annual meeting, held in Cairo, Egypt.

“Craig’s Real-Time software programs have been instrumental in revolutionizing flight simulator visual systems,” noted FSEMC Vice Chairman Barry Gaines of Thales Training & Simulation, who presented the Award.

Phillips is currently Chief Technical Officer of Redifun Simulation Inc. (RSI), which specializes in visual systems for commercial and military flight simulators. At RSI he developed the “Raster” Real-Time Software product line, which is now used in flight simulators worldwide. He previously held positions with Paradigm Simulation, Inc., Silicon Graphics, Inc., and Hughes Training, Inc.

Programs developed by Phillips have allowed simulation systems to be built with off-the-shelf projectors and computers, replacing expensive proprietary image generator hardware and calligraphic projection systems. “Craig Phillips made it possible to build off-the-shelf display systems meeting Level D regulatory requirements, a prerequisite for flight simulators,” stated Sam Buckwalter, FSEMC Executive Secretary and Senior Principal Engineer at ARINC Industry Activities, the organization that provides support for the FSEMC.

The yearly meeting of the FSEMC brings together airline and military users of flight simulators with industry suppliers, to exchange ideas and solutions and collaborate on industry standards. Attendees work their way through dozens of pertinent issues and topics, resulting in cost-saving guidance for simulator design and maintenance.

The FSEMC and its sister organizations, the Airlines Electronic Engineering Committee (AEEC) and Avionics Maintenance Conference (AMC), are aviation industry activities organized by ARINC to establish the consensus technical standards known as ARINC Standards and develop shared technical solutions. These standards and solutions improve cost effectiveness, increase productivity, and reduce life-cycle costs, for savings to the aviation industry estimated in the tens of millions of dollars annually. .

Redifun Simulation Inc. (RSI) of Euless, TX manufactures PC based visual systems for the flight-training environment. RSI engineers average 20 years’ experience in the visual simulation field, including mechanical, electrical, software, and database engineering, and program management. This gives RSI unique insight to cost effectively update and integrate flight simulator visual systems. For more information, visit the web site at www.redifun.com.
