ARINC Wins Major Control Center Contract for Busy Long Island Rail Road Switching Tower

March 4, 2009

Annapolis, Maryland—ARINC Incorporated has been awarded a contract to design and deliver a supervisory control system and communications systems for the Long Island Rail Road control tower at the Harold Interlocking Complex in Queens, NY—the busiest commuter rail switching location in the country.

ARINC will implement a supervisory control system using its unique Advanced Information Management (AIM®) software platform. The AIM platform provides an open control architecture and a comprehensive set of field-proven train control and tracking applications, all using commercial off-the-shelf computer hardware.

“This is a very important contract for ARINC, and our third control tower contract for a long-time customer, the Long Island Rail Road,” stated Dennis Lengyel, ARINC Vice President of Surface Transportation and Security Systems. “The ARINC AIM control platform is already operational at many of the largest rail transit operations in the Northeast Corridor, and we take tremendous pride in continuing to support the transit industry and general public with innovative, state of-the-art control solutions.”

The ARINC AIM system will provide new supervisory control, communications, and local control systems for the LIRR’s Harold Territory, which includes Harold, Point, and “F” Interlocking, and connects the East River Tunnels with the LIRR Main Line/Port Washington Line and Amtrak’s Gate Interlocking. New York’s transit plans call for a new direct LIRR connection under the East River from Harold Interlocking to East Side Manhattan and Grand Central Terminal.

ARINC’s AIM solutions offer virtually off-the-shelf functionality for integrated train control, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), and security functions. This flexible approach reduces system costs and closes the gap between costly, high-risk custom-made solutions and the rigid limitations of product-oriented designs.

AIM systems are in daily use by many of the nation’s leading transit systems. In the Northeast Corridor these include the Long Island Rail Road's Babylon and Port Washington Towers, New Jersey Transit’s Commuter and Light Rails, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, Baltimore Metro and Light Rail, and the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Company.

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is the busiest commuter railroad in North America, providing an average of 269,000 customer trips each weekday and some 80.3 million trips per year. The LIRR system comprises eleven branches, stretching from the eastern tip of Montauk to three major New York City terminals, Penn Station, Flatbush Avenue, and Hunterspoint Avenue through major transfer hubs at Jamaica Station and Harold Interlocking.
